What You Should Know: Not All Highways and Expressways Will Accept FASTag Annual Passes

Many Indians have already signed up for the FASTag Annual pass, which was introduced a few days ago. Keep in mind that not all highways can be traversed with it.

The FASTag Annual Pass was launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on August 15, 2025, which is India’s Independence Day. Private vehicle owners are the target market for this prepaid toll system. Drivers can gain unrestricted access to National Highways and Expressways for year or up to 200 toll crossings (whichever comes first) by paying Rs. 3,000 once. welcome substitute for the recurring per-trip charge approach is this project. Based on data, the public’s reaction to the FASTag yearly pass appears to be favorable. More than 1.4 lakh users had registered in single day. This trend persisted, and by the end of the fourth day, the total number of subscriptions had surpassed five lakh.

FASTag Annual Pass: Who Can Apply?

Cars, jeeps, and vans are among the private, non-commercial vehicles that are the focus of the pass. As long as they already have an active and correctly linked FASTag, they qualify. This pass cannot be transferred, and it will be immediately deactivated if it is used on vehicle other than the one shown on the FASTag. Each one-way passage at point-based toll plaza counts as one trip, while return counts as two. According to IANS, an entire journey from entry to exit counts as single trip in closed or ticketed systems.

FASTag Annual Pass: What It Doesn’t Cover

Only travel on key national highways and national expressways under central government management is eligible for the FASTag Annual Pass. It specifically pertains to toll plazas managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The toll will be taken out of your regular FASTag account as usual if your car is traveling on state highway. You will therefore be required to pay as usual at the toll plazas on local government-managed highways and expressways. For instance, because the State Government is in charge of the Yamuna, Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, and Agra-Lucknow expressways in Uttar Pradesh, the FASTag Annual pass is not valid for travel on these routes. Additionally, taxis, local tolls, parking fees, and commercial fleets are not covered by the FASTag Annual Pass. The regular FASTag system will continue to be used for them.

FASTag Annual Pass: How To Activate Your Annual Pass In 5 Steps

  1. Open the Rajmarg Yatra app or head to the official NHAI/MoRTH portal.
  2. Submit your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) and FASTag ID to verify eligibility.
  3. Complete the Rs 3,000 payment through UPI, net banking, or a credit/debit card.
  4. Receive confirmation via SMS or in-app notification (most passes activate within two hours).
  5. Once activated, two accounts will be created for the same FASTag of your vehicle. One will be for the annual pass, and the other will be your existing one for regular payments.

Note: Before receiving the FASTag yearly pass, you must change the vehicle registration number if your FASTag is only registered with chassis number.

The FASTag immediately switches back to its standard mode after it expires. Travelers only need to pay Rs 3,000 to renew if they want to keep using the annual convenience.

FASTag yearly pass could save thousands of rupees annually for people who commute great distances frequently. The prepaid approach has the ability to increase highway travel’s economy and efficiency because it has been integrated with the current FASTag system.
