Indian Tourists Caught Taking Hotel Items in Bali

What began as a routine hotel checkout in Bali has snowballed into a social media controversy. While travellers commonly carry complimentary toiletries or tea and coffee sachets, a viral post has highlighted a case that went far beyond that.
The incident, reported from a luxury property in Ubud, shows hotel staff confronting a group of Indian tourists after allegedly discovering several missing items during checkout. The video has triggered widespread outrage online, with users debating travel etiquette and responsible behaviour.

According to reports by The Bali Times, the incident occurred on April 19, 2026, at Asvara Resort in Ubud. Four Indian tourists, who had checked in on April 16 for a short stay, were stopped during checkout after staff noticed several items missing from their rooms.
During a routine inspection, hotel authorities reportedly discovered multiple hotel belongings packed inside the guests’ luggage. The items included bath and pool towels, kimono robes, a hair dryer, a doormat, a TV remote box, and dining utensils. The situation escalated when staff halted the checkout process and conducted a detailed search, eventually recovering the missing items from the tourists’ bags.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, the matter did not escalate into legal action. Local police confirmed that the issue was resolved through mutual agreement after the tourists returned all the items, following which the hotel decided not to press charges. The guests were eventually allowed to check out and leave the property.
The episode, however, has sparked widespread disappointment online, with many users expressing concern over travel etiquette and responsible behaviour.
