Over 250 Monkeys Wreak Havoc on UP Crops

In a unique example of rural innovation, farmers in Sambhal district have adopted an unconventional yet effective strategy to tackle the growing menace of crop-raiding monkeys.
A video from Firozpur village has gone viral on social media, showing farmers dressed in bear costumes patrolling fields to scare away animals. The footage highlights both the ingenuity of local farmers and their ongoing struggle with repeated wildlife intrusion over the past several months.
According to India Today, villagers have been incurring significant losses as over 250 monkeys repeatedly damaged crops such as potatoes, maize, and strawberries. Conventional methods, including chasing the animals with brooms, banging utensils, and installing scarecrows, proved ineffective. Despite multiple complaints to wildlife authorities, residents reported little to no relief from the ongoing issue.
Eventually, a group of farmers, including Dharmveer, opted for an unconventional approach. They began patrolling their fields dressed in bear costumes and masks, attempting to mimic a natural predator to deter the monkeys. The strategy reportedly proved effective, significantly reducing the animals’ intrusion into farmlands
Speaking to India Today, Dharmveer said the bear costume cost around ₹1,600 but helped safeguard crops worth significantly more. Encouraged by the results, several other villagers have begun adopting the method, spending a few hours each day patrolling their fields in similar attire.

As reported by The Times of India, similar scare tactics have been employed in parts of North India, where monkeys have become increasingly bold, frequently entering homes and searching for food in densely populated areas.
While the strategy has helped farmers protect their harvest, it has also drawn mixed reactions. Children in the village have reportedly been seen either running away in fear or playfully chasing the “bear,” reflecting the unusual impact of the tactic on the local community.
The viral video has sparked a wave of humorous reactions on social media, with users sharing witty remarks about the unusual tactic. Several commented on how the “bear” was not only scaring monkeys but also people, while others joked about abandoned “potato heist” plans and the eerie sight of someone in such a costume roaming around in the dark.
