You might throw expensive sh*z in the trash ‘coz you don’t need those things anymore, but you know someone else could benefit from them? You may have heard the saying that goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Well, that is what explains the situation quoted above.
Can you imagine the person who found your lost item in the trash making a fortune? Yes, a woman in Pennsylvania is one of those scavengers, who apparently earns $5000 (₹4 lakh) every month by selling what she finds in the trash.
Various reports indicate that Veronica Taylor has made a full-time job as a garbage collector by digging up garbage, uncovering artifacts and selling them. The 32-year-old sells these scavenging items on the auction app, WhatNot and on live-streamed auctions.
“It’s like a real treasure hunt,” Taylor told news agency SWNS, the New York Post reports.
Taylor had started the project as a “hobby” in 2022 and turned it into a lucrative business with her friend Liz Wilson earlier this year. “You never know what you’re going to find. I can stay with my best friend and make a living finding things,” Taylor added.
Both of them travel to places while exploring dumpsters in “rich-people neighborhoods” and at thrift shops.
She reportedly found designer items, including a Louis Vuitton purse and Michael Kors shoes, in a trash can. “We see Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors. It’s in retail stores. We thought, “There’s no way this was going to be in the trash,” Taylor and his friend said.
“I want to say we’ve been getting $4,000 to $5,000 a month. It’s definitely not worth working a real job for,” she told the agency further.
Apart from these branded items, they also pick food and hygiene products from trash, most of which they donate to charity.
