Travelers to Japan can plan their trip with less luggage, thanks to Japan Airlines (JAL) new trial program Any Wear, Anywhere. The airline allows passengers to rent clothes upon arrival, so they don’t have to carry luggage. Passengers can borrow outfits based on size, season and color. The initiative started on July 5, 2023 and will run on a trial basis until August 2024.
Another objective of the aircraft is to reduce the weight of the aircraft, thereby reducing the air emissions of the aircraft. A statement released by the airline said: “With more people flying again after the COVID-19 pandemic, and in recent times focusing on sustainability, there is a growing movement around the world to promote sustainable tourism.
It further said that the concept of the service is to provide a travel experience with minimal luggage by offering clothing rentals at the destination, thereby creating environmental value.
According to the website of the clothing rental service, the weight of passengers, luggage, and luggage add up to fuel consumption. For 10 kg less per small bag from the flight between New York and Tokyo, the carbon emissions can be reduced by 7.5 kg!
The website further explains that passengers can also reserve clothes for up to one month in advance and borrow them for two weeks. It also mentioned that the clothing available for rental will be of a mix of brands and second-hand pieces.
Airlines have said that today’s travelers are looking to make more sustainable choices when it comes to destinations, accommodations, transportation and more, but they still have a lot of options. “Many passengers now like to eat and stay in hotels at their destination, but they often bring their clothes home,” the airline said.
The prices for clothing rentals depend on the number of items reserved. Men’s casual summer selection with two pairs of shorts and three T-shirts costs £22 (INR 2351). Women’s smart-casual ensemble of three to four tops and two pairs of trousers for spring or autumn is available for rent at £27.50 (INR 2939).
