The Centre revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and brought in the J&K Reorganisation Bill 2019 which splits the state into two new Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, without a legislature.

The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir has been bifurcated into two Union Territories (UT) of J&K and Ladakh. The newly formed union territories have been formed under a reorganization act passed by the Parliament on 5-6 August 2020. At present India has 8 Union Territories.

Of the eight union territories in India. Three union territories have their own legislatures: Delhi, Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) and Jammu and Kashmir. Each territory and state of the union has its own capital.
