Indian Family Recovers Lost Valuables in Dubai

Dubai’s reputation for safety frequently goes viral on social media, but the city is also known for its swift recovery of lost valuables.
An Indian family recently experienced this first-hand, highlighting Dubai’s culture of honesty and its highly efficient recovery system. The incident underscores how quickly and effectively authorities act to trace and return lost items.
Kamini Kannan, who lived in the UAE for 23 years before returning to India in 2021, had travelled back to Dubai to attend a wedding when the incident occurred. During her visit, she checked her old gold pouch and found it torn. She then transferred her valuables—including four 22-carat gold coins weighing 8 grams each and a 50-gram 24-carat gold bar—into a temporary pouch and placed it on the dining table.
While cleaning the house, Kamini’s son Abhimanyu accidentally threw the pouch into the trash, mistaking it for waste. The next morning, when Kamini discovered it was missing, Abhimanyu realised his mistake and informed the family. Fearing the gold was lost forever, they initially informed the building’s security staff but had little hope of recovery. The valuables were estimated to be worth around 50,000 dirhams (approximately Rs 13 lakh). Speaking to Khaleej Times, Kamini said, “If it went in the trash, it’s gone,” adding that the family did not even file a police complaint, believing nothing could be done.
The Surprise Call That Changed Everything 📞

Three days later, the family received an unexpected update. Abhimanyu got a phone call asking whether he had lost something. Initially assuming it was a prank, he was shocked to discover that the caller was a Dubai police officer, informing him about the recovered valuables.
At the building reception, police explained how the valuables were recovered. A waste-collection worker discovered the pouch while sorting trash and immediately realised it contained gold. Instead of keeping it, he took it to the Gold Souk, where a formal system exists for handing over found gold items to authorities.
Police Trace the Gold’s Owner
Officials questioned the worker, who confirmed he had found the pouch in the trash. Using waste-collection records, police traced the garbage back to the specific building and, with the help of building security, identified and contacted the family. Abhimanyu was then asked to visit Naif Police Station, where officers showed him the recovered gold. To verify ownership, he provided photographs, purchase bills, and other proof that the valuables belonged to his mother. “I just had to show photos and bills to prove it was my mother’s,” he said.
The family expressed deep gratitude to Dubai Police for their swift action, despite no FIR being registered in the case. The incident highlighted the strict enforcement of law and the efficiency of systems in the city. The waste worker’s honesty in resisting temptation, along with the police’s prompt response, drew widespread appreciation. For the family, the recovery came as a major relief, as the gold represented a long-term investment. Kamini said she had witnessed many such acts of honesty during her years in Dubai, but described this incident as the most memorable.
The incident further strengthened the family’s trust in Dubai’s security and governance systems. It serves as a powerful example of how strong laws, accountability, and integrity can ensure that even accidentally discarded valuables are traced and returned to their rightful owners.
