Flat cloud systems known as “shelf clouds” are often seen as wedge-shaped or arc-shaped cloud shelves near the base of a thunderstorm or a strong cold front. Normally, they appear as dark, threatening clouds that cover the horizon.
Platform clouds are caused by warm, rising air in front of storm systems or cold fronts. Convection occurs when warm air rises and cools causing clouds to form. The clouds on the planet have a unique shape because of the cool air that spreads over the land as it descends from the storm. This wind causes the cloud to break up and look like a shelf.
Severe thunderstorms or severe weather lines usually occur when the cloud is at the top. It is often associated with strong winds, heavy rain and potentially dangerous weather conditions. As it progresses, the weather can change suddenly, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and possibly even lightning and hail.
Despite its imposing nature, plain clouds do not immediately cause storms or other extreme weather events. However, they often accompany strong thunderstorms and can be a sign of turbulence in the atmosphere. When such clouds are seen, it can be a sign that dangerous weather conditions are about to develop. Indeed, it is a beautiful scene of nature!
