Body-Positive Model Shares How She Turned Self-Hate Into Self-Love

Before becoming a strong voice for body acceptance, Iskra Lawrence spent years struggling with her self-image. Today, the model and advocate uses her platform to promote self-love and challenge unrealistic beauty standards. She now inspires millions of people with similar insecurities to embrace who they are.

For Iskra Lawrence, body confidence has been a journey rather than a destination.

Lawrence said that her relationship with her body wasn’t always good. She learned to accept herself only after many years of struggle and personal growth.

She explained that no one teaches you how to love your body. She used to think her body was the enemy because the fashion industry told her she needed to be taller and thinner—something she simply couldn’t do. No matter how much she restricted her eating or exercised, her hips stayed the same. She realized that she couldn’t treat her body like an enemy because it’s her home. Changing the way she thought took a long time, but now she doesn’t worry about things like a thigh gap or cellulite. Instead, she focuses less on how her body looks and more on what it can do.

The model emphasizes that your body belongs to you and only you.

A few years ago, Lawrence became well-known after she replied to someone who criticized her for eating snacks. She said, “Someone told me to stop eating crisps and blamed me for ruining people’s health. I ignored them and ate the crisps anyway. It actually inspired a lot of people. Don’t tell me what to do with my body or my life. I’ll do what I want.”

That moment soon became a symbol of body positivity and self-acceptance. With that small action, Lawrence showed her followers that no one else has the right to control their choices or decide what they do with their bodies. It inspired many people to feel more confident, take charge of their own lives, and live in a way that feels right to them.

“You’re imperfectly perfect” has become her life mantra.

Lawrence teaches people how to feel comfortable in their own bodies. In her interview, she explained how she learned this for herself.

“I used to be obsessed with being perfect, and it affected me badly when I focused too much on losing weight. As a perfectionist, I felt like I could never stop trying. But when I finally accepted that nobody is perfect, and applied that thinking to other parts of my life, I stopped feeling guilty about what I ate and about saying no to things,” she said.

The model said, “Realizing that it’s okay to make mistakes and that failure is a normal part of life helped me stop putting so much pressure on myself. We often treat ourselves the worst, but we need to learn to be our own best friend.”

She went on to stress the importance of support and positive messages, saying, “It’s so important to have a group of people reminding each other that they are beautiful just as they are. Taking a break from messages that make us feel we’re not good enough is essential.”
