167 Million Years Old Dinosaur Fossil Found in Jaisalmer; Apparently The Oldest of Its Kind

India is said to have many fossil parks and fossil sites across the country. The discovery of dinosaur fossils is common and popular in India. But, the latest buzz is about finding in Jaisalmer. The remains of a 167 million-year-old herbivorous dinosaur have been discovered in the desert. If you are an archeology enthusiast, this article is for you.

167-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Fossil Found in Jaisalmer

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) recently conducted a special study. They found the oldest fossil of a herbivorous dinosaur. The discovery took place in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, Times Travel reported.

Finally, this is the first discovery of a dicraeosaurid dinosaur in India. Scientists have discovered this groundbreaking dinosaur skeleton in 2018, TOI reported. Through extensive research, they confirmed that it was a previously undiscovered species, the report said.

They named this dinosaur Tharosaurus indicus, honoring its origins in the Thar Desert in India. The researchers published the study in Scientific Reports, an international journal under the Nature portfolio, Times Travel reported.

What Did They Find During The Discovery?

During the exploration excavation of Middle Jurassic rocks in Jaisalmer, the team unearthed the fossil, TOI said. After its discovery, a group of six scientists spent about five years studying the discovery, the report said. This is not the first time that a mysterious discovery of a dinosaur has attracted attention.

In January, researchers found 92 nests in the Narmada Valley in central India, according to a TOI report. They discovered a staggering total of 256 fossilized eggs during this time. These eggs, which belonged to titanosaurs, the largest land-walking dinosaurs, made significant headlines.

Such discoveries cause great excitement, showing the important role of India in the evolution of dinosaurs. They suggest that India played an important role in shaping the chronology of dinosaurs. These results will be a topic of discussion for a long time.
