Noida Police Arrested 138 Drunk Drivers On New Year’s Eve

On December 31, the last day of the special drive, the police issued a total of 6,826 e-challans to people found violating traffic rules in Noida and Greater Noida. The police said, of them, 3,360 were punished for driving without a helmet, 644 for speeding, 503 for leaving the car in the parking lot, 309 for driving driving the wrong way, 107 for driving without a seat belt, police said.

Noida: Police found 138 people driving under the influence of alcohol on New Year’s Eve in Noida and Greater Noida and issued e-challans for violating road safety rules, officials said on Monday. Fifteen vehicles were seized during an enforcement operation by the traffic police on December 31, they said.

The action is part of a 20-day road safety campaign conducted by the traffic department on the instructions of Gautam Buddh Nagar police officer Laxmi Singh to prevent road accidents. A police spokesperson said, “As a part of the New Year campaign, police teams have been deployed at 40 locations in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Gautam Buddha Nagar police stations to trace the drivers down because of alcohol.

“During the campaign, 2,485 drivers were checked and out of them, 138 were found to be drunk. E-challans were issued to 123 drivers while vehicles of 15 drivers were impounded,” the spokesperson added.

On December 31, the last day of the special drive, the police issued a total of 6,826 e-challans to people found violating traffic rules in Noida and Greater Noida. The police said, among them, 3,360 people were punished for driving without a helmet, 644 for speeding, 503 for leaving a car in an unparked place, 309 for driving driving the wrong way, 107 for driving without a seat belt. Another 1,903 e-challans were issued under the ‘other’ category, he added. A police chief died in a road accident.

Police sub-inspector killed in road crash

A sub-inspector died and another suffered injuries here allegedly after a police vehicle was hit by a commercial pick-up truck in the early hours of Monday, officials said. The incident took place around 2 am at a road intersection in Sector 2, under Phase 1 police station limits, they said.

“The police jeep was hit by the pick-up truck which was being driven at a high speed and carelessly. Sub-inspector Vijay Ahlawat and sub-inspector Ram Kishore suffered injuries in the crash,” a police spokesperson said. “The injured policemen were admitted to the private Kailash Hospital where sub-inspector Ram Kishore succumbed during treatment. He was aged 54,” the spokesperson said.

The police said the erring commercial vehicle, which is registered in Delhi, has been impounded and its driver taken into custody. Further legal proceedings in the case are underway, the police added.

Gautam Buddh Nagar district, which comprises Noida and Greater Noida, recorded more than 400 deaths in more than a thousand road crash incidents in 2023, according to official figures. The district, adjoining national capital Delhi, recorded 1,684 deaths in road crashes between 2019 and 2022, the official data showed.
