Viral: Man Buried With Luxury Mercedes at Funeral in China

Liaoning: A wealthy man’s funeral in northeastern China has gone viral on social media after videos showed his family burying a luxury Mercedes-Benz car next to his tombstone. The man, who was in his 70s, passed away recently, drawing widespread attention due to the unusual funeral ritual.
The car, reportedly worth over ₹1.5 crore, was buried as a funeral offering in Liaoyang city. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the deceased was a collector of luxury vehicles, and his family believed that including the car in the burial would ensure a peaceful journey for his soul in the afterlife.

The luxury car buried at the funeral reportedly bore the number plate ‘8888’, a number widely regarded as a symbol of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. The vehicle was also draped in a red cloth, a colour traditionally associated with luck and auspiciousness.
Videos circulating on social media show a large gathering at the funeral site, where an excavator was used to carefully lift and lower the car into a pit dug beside the deceased’s tombstone. The unusual ritual has drawn significant attention online, with many viewers reacting to the extravagant send-off.

The viral video has also sparked criticism online, with several users questioning the need for such an extravagant gesture. Many argued that showing care and support to loved ones during their lifetime holds far greater value than symbolic displays after death.
Others raised environmental concerns, pointing out the potential impact of burying a luxury vehicle, while describing the act as excessive and unnecessary. The incident has triggered a wider debate on social values, traditions, and responsibility.
