Tata Motors on Tuesday revealed the much-awaited 2025 Tata Sierra SUV in India, bringing back the iconic model after more than 20 years.
The launch included only the ICE (petrol/diesel) variants, while an electric version will be introduced later. The Sierra, last sold in 2003, is expected to be priced around ₹10–11 lakh (ex-showroom).
Even before the official launch, many dealerships had started taking small token payments — some as low as ₹11,000 — to check customer interest. These were not official bookings, which are expected to start soon after the launch.
The new Sierra is set to compete with popular midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, offering modern technology and engineering along with a strong sense of nostalgia.
Design and Appearance
The new Tata Sierra carries a retro-inspired design that proudly keeps its classic glasshouse look alive, reminding us of the iconic 1990s model. It now features modern elements like a wide B-pillar and sleek glass panels with black accents.
Its boxy shape, upright stance, and gloss-black trim connect the LED headlights, DRLs, Tata logo, and the “Sierra” badge into one clean design. The SUV also gets a skid plate and dual fog lamps neatly fitted into the bumper, adding to its modern appeal.
Interior
The Tata Sierra comes with three dashboard displays—one for the driver and two infotainment screens that can share content smoothly. It also uses the Tata Curvv’s four-spoke steering wheel, which features touch-sensitive buttons and an illuminated logo.
Inside, the cabin has a black and grey theme, complemented by a panoramic sunroof that stretches up to the C-pillar. The SUV offers five seats with dual-tone beige and grey upholstery, along with three-point seatbelts and adjustable headrests to ensure both comfort and safety.
The Sierra’s cabin looks a lot like the Curvv’s, but it also introduces some new design elements for Tata. These include a triple-screen setup, a 12-speaker JBL sound system with a sound bar, a head-up display (HUD), and a new centre console. It also gets features like dual-zone climate control, connected car tech, Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and powered, ventilated front seats.
The famous Alpine roof has been redesigned for a modern look—now it’s a flat glass panel instead of the older curved style. A sunroof adds to the sense of space. All variants come with six airbags, ABS with EBD, a stability programme, and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. The SUV is 4.6 metres long and has a 2.7-metre wheelbase.
Exterior Design Highlights
The Tata Sierra features a boxy shape, an Alpine-style glass roof, 19-inch alloy wheels, full LED lights, a rear spoiler, and an updated Tata signature grille. It comes in six exterior colour options and three interior themes.
Features
The Tata Sierra comes with all the premium features you expect in this segment. You get ventilated front seats, connected car technology, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, an auto-dimming IRVM, rear sunshades, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof and a wireless phone charger.
Along with these, the Sierra also offers some impressive extras. It gets a 12-speaker JBL sound system with a subwoofer, and a special wide soundbar placed in the middle of the dashboard. There are also 13 JBL sound modes so you can adjust the audio to your liking.
The car features a 3-screen setup, including a dedicated entertainment screen for the front passenger to watch movies or OTT content. The passenger can use wireless headphones so the driver stays distraction-free.
Some variants also come with a head-up display (HUD), which shows important information like speed and navigation on the windscreen, helping the driver keep their eyes on the road. Interestingly, the HUD is available only with the 2-screen setup, not the 3-screen layout.
For added comfort, the front seats also get an extendable seat squab, allowing you to adjust thigh support as per your preference.
Colours and Prices
The latest teaser confirms six colour options for the Sierra SUV: Bengal Rouge, Coorg Clouds, Munnar Mist, Pristine White, Pure Grey, and Andaman Adventure. The Sierra is expected to be priced between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).
Engine, Gearbox and Suspension
The Tata Sierra offers engine options similar to its rivals, the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The base option is expected to be the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, producing 106hp—slightly less than the 115hp from Hyundai and Kia—but with similar torque at 145Nm (compared to 144Nm). Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
For those seeking more power, there’s a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with direct injection, delivering 160hp and 255Nm of torque. It comes only with a 6-speed automatic and competes with models like the Hyundai Creta N Line, Kia Seltos 1.5 turbo, VW Taigun GT, and Skoda Kushaq 1.5 turbo.
Diesel fans have a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel option producing 118hp and 280Nm of torque, available with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
For comfort and handling, the Sierra features frequency-dependent damping that adjusts to road conditions. Some variants also offer terrain modes—Auto, Wet, and Rough. The new SUV has a claimed turning radius of 10.6 metres.
The Tata Sierra’s platform is designed to support alternative fuel options, including petrol-electric hybrids and CNG. Tata also mentions that it’s ready for all-wheel drive, hinting that an AWD version is “coming soon.” On the capability front, the Sierra offers 205mm of ground clearance, can wade through 450mm of water, and has approach, departure, and breakover angles of 26.5°, 31.6°, and 23.1°, respectively.
Verdict
The Tata Sierra checks nearly all the right boxes and even offers a little extra. On paper, it comes with a good price, the right features, plenty of space, and multiple engine and gearbox options to suit different needs. The real test, however, will be its performance, comfort, and—most importantly—reliability on the road. If everything works out as planned, Tata could have a real winner.
