“SIM Cards Yield Gold Worth ₹27 Lakh, Sparks Buying Rush”

“Man Extracts Gold From Used SIM Cards Using Chemicals”

A man from southeastern China has reportedly extracted gold worth more than ₹27 lakh from discarded SIM cards and other electronic waste, sparking a surge in demand for used SIM cards on second-hand marketplaces. The man’s experiment, which went viral online, prompted many buyers to stockpile old SIM cards, though he warned people not to attempt the process without proper technical knowledge due to potential safety risks.

The man, identified online as Qiao, is based in Huizhou in China’s Guangdong province and works professionally in the field of precious metal recovery.

In a video shared on January 20, Qiao showcased his gold-refining process, which quickly went viral and garnered more than five million views across social media platforms. The footage showed him processing large quantities of discarded SIM cards and electronic waste using chemical techniques involving corrosion, displacement reactions, and heating to extract precious metals.

Here is a polished news-style rewrite:

After filtering and refining the residue, Qiao revealed nearly 191 grams of gold, estimated to be worth around 200,000 yuan (approximately ₹27 lakh). Speaking to local media, he clarified that the gold was not extracted solely from SIM cards but also from other electronic waste materials

He said he processed nearly two tonnes of electronic scrap, including chip waste from the telecommunications industry. According to Qiao, SIM cards contain trace amounts of gold because some components are gold-plated to enhance durability and resistance to corrosion.

Chinese media reports say a standard SIM card typically contains less than 0.001 grams of gold, though other discarded items such as bank card chips and communication device contacts can also yield recoverable precious metals. Qiao’s video quickly went viral, with many online users dubbing him an “alchemist.” The surge in interest led to brisk activity on resale platforms, where sellers began offering bundles of used SIM cards marketed specifically for gold extraction.

Some online listings drew thousands of views and dozens of orders, while other vendors began selling gold-refining tools and instructional materials, with one package reportedly selling nearly 2,000 copies. Despite the viral attention, Qiao said he did not intend to promote amateur gold extraction.

He stressed that he operates legally with the required certifications and was simply sharing his professional work. Qiao also warned that the process is hazardous and not suitable for untrained individuals.

In China, the refining and circulation of precious metals are tightly regulated, and electronic waste such as old SIM cards is classified as hazardous material. Unauthorised refining activities can lead to severe penalties, including hefty fines and prison sentences. Legal experts have also warned that selling gold-extraction kits online could expose both buyers and sellers to legal risks, as the process often involves the use of dangerous chemicals.
