Origin of Aarti

Meaning of the word Aarti

Aarti comes from the Sanskrit word आरात्रिक  which means something that removes darkness, i.e. ignorance, which has the shape of a flame that flutters around the divinity.

Aarti is said to be descended from the Vedic concept of fire rituals.

The Worshorship addresses the Divinity and the plate of Aarti or waves in a circular movement, in the sense of time clockwise. Aarti symbolizes a cycle of energy, with divinity in the middle.
The priest circulates the plate with the wicks illuminated to all gifts to receive infused blessings within the flames. The devotees cover their hands on the flame and then raise the palms on the forehead.
