Shamshan Wedding in Uttarakhand Goes Viral

Uttarakhand Wedding Trend Triggers Debate

Uttarakhand: Wedding at Cremation Ground Triggers Probe, Sparks Online Debate

A wedding ceremony held at a cremation ground in Uttarakhand has sparked controversy and drawn administrative attention. The event, organised along a riverside shamshan ghat, has fueled a wider debate on social media over cultural sensitivity and the growing trend of unconventional wedding venues.

According to reports, the ceremony took place on April 25 at the confluence of the Ramganga River and Badangad River in Marchula, located in the Salt block near Jim Corbett National Park. Authorities have taken note of the incident, with discussions ongoing regarding the appropriateness of the location and potential violations.

The site, traditionally reserved for last rites, was reportedly converted into a decorated wedding venue featuring ceremonial rituals and celebratory arrangements. Around 50 guests attended the event, with music and festivities taking place at a location generally regarded as solemn and spiritually significant.

The incident came to light after a video shared by the Instagram page So Ghaziabad went viral, rapidly gaining traction online. The footage, showing the decorated cremation ground and the couple exchanging garlands, triggered strong reactions from local residents and social organisations, many of whom described the act as disrespectful and inappropriate.

Social activist Narayan Singh Rawat criticised the choice of venue, stating that cremation grounds carry deep religious and emotional significance and should not be used for celebratory events.

Raising concerns over possible violations, Tehsildar Abid Ali said the organisers had not obtained the required administrative permission to host a public gathering at the site. He also pointed to safety risks in the area, noting that it is known to be prone to crocodile presence.

In response to the backlash, authorities have issued a notice to the resort linked to the event and initiated an inquiry. Resort manager Rakesh Sharma stated that the organisers had been informed about the nature of the location but chose to proceed with their plans.

Officials also noted that Uttarakhand’s growing popularity as a destination wedding hub, combined with gaps in regulatory oversight, could lead to similar incidents if clearer guidelines are not introduced.

The viral video has drawn mixed reactions online, with some users criticising the event as a publicity stunt, while others responded with sarcasm.

The viral video also prompted a wave of reactions on social media, with users expressing a mix of criticism, sarcasm, and divided opinions. Some made light of the situation, joking about the venue being inexpensive or referencing it as a “till death do us apart” setting.

Others defended the choice, arguing that the location near the Ganga should not be viewed negatively, given its religious significance. However, several users criticised the move as an attempt to gain online attention, suggesting that people are increasingly willing to cross boundaries for viral content.
